The Texas Rangers lost 7-2 to the New York Yankees in Game 5 of the American League Championship Series Wednesday night at Yankee Stadium.
The Yankees scored three runs in the second inning, two in the third and one in the fifth, putting an end to a five-game road winning streak for the Rangers during the 2010 postseason. With the loss, the Rangers lead the Yankees in the best-of-seven ALCS three-games-to-two. Yankees’ left-handed starting pitcher C.C. Sabathia (1-0) earned the victory allowing two runs on 11 hits with no walks and seven strikeouts. Rangers’ lefty starter C.J. Wilson (0-1) took the loss, giving up six runs (five earned) on six hits, while walking four batters and striking out two. New York climbed ahead 3-0 in the bottom of the second inning and didn’t look back. Catcher Jorge Posada and centerfielder Curtis Granderson had RBI singles that scored Alex Rodriguez and Lance Berkman, who both reached base with walks. Posada would also score after Texas right fielder Jeff Francoeur made a throwing error, attempting to throw out the 39-year-old Yankees’ backstop at third base. The Yankees added to its lead with back-to-back solo home runs to begin the bottom of the third. Right fielder Nick Swisher sent a 90-mile per hour fastball from Wilson into the left-field seats. Two pitches later, second baseman Robinson Cano went deep to right-center field, giving the Yankees a 5-0 edge. Catcher Matt Treanor provided the Rangers’ first run with a solo blast to left to start the fifth, cutting Texas’ deficit to 5-1. Wilson allowed another New York run after issuing a leadoff walk to Swisher in the bottom of the fifth. Swisher was plated four batters later on a bases-loaded sacrifice fly to right by Berkman, making the game 6-1. Texas’ final run came on Treanor’s RBI groundout that scored Murphy (singled to right), which made the score 6-2. Granderson gave the final blow, launching a line drive homer over the right-field fence to give the Yankees a 7-2 advantage. Francoeur and outfielder Nelson Cruz were the only starters in the Rangers’ lineup not to strikeout. Cruz exited the game after tweaking his left hamstring while chasing down a Posada double in the left-field corner in the fourth inning. Texas shortstop Elvis Andrus went 3-for-5 and is batting .364 in the series (8-22). Andrus has hit safely in each of the club’s 11 games this postseason. Rangers’ right-hander Colby Lewis will start against Yankees’ righty Phil Hughes in Game 6 Friday, Oct. 22, with a 7:07 p.m. first pitch scheduled for Rangers Ballpark in Arlington.
