DALLAS -- The Dallas Mavericks lost 88-83 to the Chicago Bulls Friday evening at the American Airlines Center. The loss is the Mavericks first against an Eastern Conference opponent this season, and snaps a three-game winning streak over the Bulls, who beat the Mavs away from Chicago for the first time since February 2005. Dallas (7-4) led by 12 points with 5:04 remaining in the third period, but it wouldn't be enough as Chicago (7-4) responded with a 13-4 blitz to close out the third and used a 16-4 run in the fourth to claim the win. The Bulls out-hustled the Mavs and dominated them in both second-chance points (25-8) and rebounds (59-34). "Tonight I'm concerned about our rebounding," Mavericks' head coach Rick Carlisle said. "It was really disappointing because we played so hard on some of those possessions, but we weren't able to come up with the ball. Unfortunately, that was the result, and they made a few more shots." The Mavericks recorded a season-low 13 points in the first quarter and trailed Chicago, 19-13, after 12 minutes of play. Forward Dirk Nowitzki tallied 10 of Dallas' 13 points in the first period, and finished with a season-high 36. Guard Caron Butler was the only other Mavericks' player to score in double figures, finishing with 12 points (3-10 FGs, 6-6 FTs). "I think except for Dirk a lot of guys struggled tonight," Mavericks' center Brendan Haywood said. "I don't think the game was lost on the offensive end. We just gave up way too many offensive rebounds." The Bulls grabbed 20 offensive rebounds to the Mavs' nine, thanks to the hustle from forward Taj Gibson and center Joakim Noah. Gibson made his presence known and was a rebound shy of a double-double in the first half. He would finish with 17 points and a career-high 18 boards, while Noah added 10 points with 17 rebounds and five assists. Chicago point guard Derrick Rose entered Friday night ranked fourth in the league in scoring and led the Bulls with 22 points. Bulls head coach Tom Thibodeau praised his team's relentless effort, which limited the Mavericks' offense en route to a road victory in Dallas. "Tonight we were talking about defense, and rebounding and low turnovers," Thibodeau said. "I also thought we got the ball inside, and I thought we were unselfish. We do those things, we're going to be in a position to win."
