The Dallas Cowboys sneak past the Miami Dolphins, 27-25 Thursday evening on a game-winning 31-yard field goal by David Buehler. Although the Cowboys kept the first team offense on the sidelines, there was still a lot to be happy about. A major concern for the Cowboys going into the 2010 season was the kicker position. After what was nothing short of a mental breakdown by former kicker Nick Folk, the Cowboys sent the Folk packing and gave Buehler a shot at the job. Buehler was a perfect 4-for-4 including made attempts from 51 yards, 45, 40 and the game-winning 31-yard field goal. Aside from the 45-yarder that flirted towards the right side, his other three attempts were kicked perfectly down the center of the goalpost. Sure it was just the preseason but Buehler was calm, cool and collected, which is more than half the battle at the kicker position. "I take a game-winner as I do if it's the first kick of the first quarter," Buehler said following the game. "You can't really see it as a pressure kick." Buehler's performance had Cowboys head coach Wade Phillips smiling and giving out fist bumps on the sideline. Tight end Jason Witten was not only impressed with Buehler but considers him one of the guys, which is quite a compliment for a kicker. "I'm impressed by what he's done all camp, not just tonight," Witten said. "He's been so consistent. He's not your typical kicker. I really think it's tough to rattle him, he's made some big kicks." It appears that third-string quarterback Stephen McGee will get a roster spot after a very good performance against the Dolphins Thursday night. McGee was 27-for-42, adding 304 yards and his first NFL touchdown, a pretty 43-yard pass to wideout Sam Hurd. With the clock ticking on final cuts to the Cowboys roster, Hurd was one of the receivers on the bubble and he may have McGee to thank if the Cowboys decide to keep him on their final roster. McGee and Hurd are nice stories, but ultimately, Buehler is going to be a vital part of the Cowboys success, and at least thus far, has shown the ability to be a solid NFL kicker.
